What is a Netsuke?
Netsuke are small sculptures, origin from Japan.Netsuke were in use from at least the early 17th century to the 19th century. With the Meiji restoration,Japanese culture and dress, was heavily influenced by European styles, and the kimono and obi fashion fell out of favor, which made netsuke disappear as an item for daily use by Japanese men.Netsuke as an accessory to traditional Japanese clothing, have since evolved over a time period of three hundred years that are both collected and revered by art fans worldwide.
Originally,Netsuke is of a rather practical manner and aesthetic purposes. The Japanese kimono have no pocket,so women would hold small objects in their sleeves, and men would wear a silk cord on their obi,or sash. From the cord, they would hang items such as tobacco pouches and coin purses. These items were known as sagemono. To stop the silk cord from slipping under the weight of their sagemono, they would attach a small toggle to the cord. These toggles were known as netsuke.
Netsuke was made from a wide variety of different materials, the most popular being tusk. However,it is not uncommon to find netsuke made from wood, animal tusks or bone and antlers, horn, amber, porcelain, ceramic, bamboo and more.Netsuke also were carved as different designs,as everything from animals to humans to abstract patterns.Because of their individuality and uniqueness, netsuke quickly became highly collectable.
For netsuke, the familiar style is katabori,or figural netsuke. These are many netsuke that resemble people and animals.Common netsuke with animal characters taken from China zodiac and some mythological figures, heroes and daily life.
Now,netsuke have won hefty prices from collectors from worldwide who high admire its delicate craft and the uniqueness, also bring people many many pleasures and enjoyment.
